The WPPA’s Preliminary
State Budget Review
(2/15/07)
MADISON – The Wisconsin Professional Police Association (WPPA) lauded today the state budget proposed by Governor Jim Doyle on February 13 for its commitment to protect and promote public safety in Wisconsin.
“Governor Doyle’s budget provides responsible property tax relief while ensuring that important local services like police and fire are not jeopardized,” said WPPA President Dennis LeCaptain. “This budget will put more officers on our streets and in our schools, reduce recidivism, and provide the dedicated men and women of Wisconsin’s law enforcement community with the tools they need to efficiently maintain public safety.”
Among the initiatives included in the proposed 2007-2009 budget are:
- An Increase in shared revenue funding to local governments by $15 million;
- An increase in the allowable local government levy limit from two to four percent;
- An expansion of statistical analysis efforts in support of cost-effective criminal sentencing;
- An increase in funding for monitoring serious child sex offenders;
- An increase in funding to address the backlog of processing DNA evidence at the state crime labs;
- An increase in resources for better sentencing, treatment and rehabilitation of offenders; and
- An increase in staffing for the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Established in 1932, the WPPA now advocates on behalf of nearly 11,000 active and retired members, and is widely recognized as the premier law enforcement group in Wisconsin.
