WPPA To Sponsor American Red Cross Blood Drive
The WPPA will sponsor a blood drive for the American Red Cross at Convention 2005 on Saturday, May 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
By hosting the blood drive for the American Red Cross, we are demonstrating our commitment to community health needs, while helping to ensure that an adequate blood supply is available at all times for anyone who needs it. Also, by holding a blood drive, we are hoping to offer our members and their families a more convenient blood donation opportunity.
To be eligible to give blood, one must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. Giving blood is safe, simple, and saves lives. Each pint of blood that is donated may be helping as many as three people. About 40,000 people need blood each day in the United States. They count on volunteer donors to give them a chance at life.
Tips to Make Your Donation Experience Comfortable
- Eat a well-balanced meal or snack at least two hours before you donate.
- Drink at least two to three glasses of water before donating.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol the night before and day of your donation.
- Call ahead with any health concerns. Calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE, that’s 1-800-448-3543, will help answer your questions about current medications, health conditions or the donation process in general.
- Bring a friend! Asking a friend to donate with you will give you extra support and will help the blood supply twice as much.
Positive Identification
The American Red Cross requires that volunteer blood donors provide identification before donating blood to ensure that donors: (1) are properly identified in Red Cross records; (2) are not currently disqualified from donating; and (3) can be reached for further follow up if needed.
What is acceptable identification?
- The preferred identifier is a government-issued picture identification, such as a driver’s license, or a Red Cross blood donor card.
- If a prospective donor does not have either of these, he or she will be required to provide two other forms of identification.
- A high school student who does not have acceptable identification will be required to have his or her identity and age verified by a school official.
