Welcome to the Wisconsin Professional Police Association’s 75th year of doing business. I am honored to have the confidence of our Board of Directors, and excited to be your voice in our challenges ahead.
I am a 15-year officer at the Janesville Police Department, where I currently serve as a Detective in the investigation of crimes against children. I live in Rock County with my wife, Jany, and our three children, Kyle, Kailey, and Colleen.
I congratulate Dave Mahoney, our past president, in his recent electoral victory in becoming the Sheriff of Dane County. While I am confident that Dave will serve the public well in this new capacity, I also know that his presence and dedication at the WPPA will be missed.
I want to personally extend to everyone an invitation to this year’s convention, which will be May 19-21. Please join us in the celebration of 75 years of service. The camaraderie enjoyed is second to none, not to mention the fun of celebrating it at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells!
On the business side of things, I am looking forward to a productive convention. In addition to the learning opportunities presented at the breakout sessions, I anticipate constructive results at the meetings. Some of the hot topics I am looking forward to are issues involving our service, dues, political involvement, and the importance of union membership. Join me in these discussions, and let your voices be heard. Let’s take our organization to the next level, and show Wisconsin some unmatchable professionalism and integrity.
Remember to take some time during Police Week, May 13-19, to honor the memories of our fallen brothers and sisters. In addition, I hope you have the opportunity to join us at the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony in Madison on Friday, May 18. Once again, the WPPA will sponsor a pancake and sausage breakfast the morning of May 18, prior to the law enforcement procession to the State Capitol for the Memorial Ceremony. The breakfast will be held at the Pavilion at Olin Park, the staging area for the procession.
If you have any concerns regarding issues that you feel need my attention, do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached via e-mail at dlecaptain@wppa.com or via telephone as listed on the WPPA website (www.WPPA.com). Our website also now offers new discussion forums accessible to all members and Board members. Using this new medium, I believe you will learn that you have a lot in common with other members spread out across Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula. You may likely find other locals that have already experienced something that you and your fellow members are confronting now. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn from one another.
Established in 1932, the WPPA has evolved so as to now provide a wide variety of services to the membership. Our growth has stemmed from members who were willing to share their wisdom, and leaders smart enough to heed it. Whether serving our communities in a sworn or non-sworn capacity, all WPPA members are welcome to contact me. Rest assured, I am committed to our organization and look forward to representing you for as long as I am allowed to be honored with your trust.
Thank you.
