Racine County Law Enforcement Memorial To Be Restored
By Adam A. Meyers, Co-Chair
Racine County Law Enforcement Memorial Committee

On May 15, 1963, Detective James Hantschel of the Racine Police Department was killed in the line of duty while transporting a suspect to the police station for questioning. On this date, Detective Hantschel joined the list of fallen law enforcement officers from Racine County who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the people of our community. On May 15, 1972, the citizens of Racine County dedicated a memorial to Detective Hantschel and all of the heroes listed on it to honor their memory and recognize their families who have had to endure their great loss.

Over the years, the memorial has faded in the memories of the community and the law enforcement profession. It has suffered neglect, vandalism, and loss of prominence.

The Racine County Law Enforcement Memorial Restoration Committee was formed in January 2005 to restore the monument and remind the community and law enforcement of the great sacrifice these people have made, and indeed the sacrifices made by all officers and deputies on a daily basis while working to keep our communities safe. We are asking you to help us honor all law enforcement officers in Racine County by contributing to this effort through the purchase of a memorial brick.

The restoration project will be an expansion on the original monument stone and flagpole that stand today. The design will include:

  1. A memorial walkway in a ribbon pattern made with memorial bricks which can be purchased and names or messages inscribed on them.

  2. A star will be added to the foundation of the monument stone along with a path to view the names of the officers and deputies who have died in the line of duty.

  3. Trees and plants will be included to provide color, as well as benches for visitors to sit and enjoy the surroundings and reflect.
