THE WPPA’S INQUEST BILL APPROVED
BY WISCONSIN STATE SENATE
With the leadership of Senate Majority Leader Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center), the Wisconsin State Senate today passed the WPPA’s inquest bill. Senate Bill 132 would require public employers to reimburse law enforcement officers and other public safety employees for reasonable attorneys fees if an inquest finds no wrongdoing for actions taken in the line of duty. Introduced by State Senator Ted Kanavas (R-Brookfield), SB 132 would protect public safety employees from having to second-guess their actions out of fear that a potential inquest could lead to financial ruin.
The WPPA has sought this bill for many years, and the fact that the senate passed the measure is an outstanding development. The Senate Judiciary, Corrections, and Privacy Committee unanimously approved the measure on September 13.
The bill must now be approved by the State Assembly and Governor Jim Doyle before it can become law. The WPPA thanks the members of the senate, as well as its members who took the time to let their elected officials know how important this bill is to the WPPA membership.
